Why it's important to do the things you love
I don't remember a time when my dad discouraged me from doing things that I love, even if it disappoints some people. As a result, I've become closer to him.
However, sadly enough, there have been people that I've been close to who discouraged me from doing what I love simply because they don't agree with it. As a result, I've drawn myself further from them.
Ever since I was a small child I wanted to do something relating to music when I grow up. I did go through a phase though where I wanted to be a mushroom farmer...they were, to say the very least, very interesting times. But as I exited that phase, I became more involved in music and the arts. Music became my absolute passion and I never got sick of it. It was a cute little dream when I was in grade six, but in grade seven, things started getting ugly socially.
Nearly everyone I know aside from a small group of people have discouraged me in some way from doing music. I suppose that's because the music industry is quite corrupt in many areas and you could say it's because they care about me. However, is caring about someone discouraging them from doing something they love? No. If you want to protect me from corrupt sources, then they encourage me to stay away from that specifically. I've come to learn that generally, the people that make me the most happy support me in my music and show their love and support through that and making sure I don't get into trouble in my daily life in order to prepare me for my future.
Perhaps someone out there can relate. Perhaps you've always wanted to do something or be someone, but it's discouraged by everyone you know or by the majority of people you know. And I find that a very large amount of the time, the thing that the individual wants to achieve really will not hurt anybody. So if you've found yourself in this situation and you can resonate with the things that I've written, then I have a piece of advice for you.
My advice?
My advice is to live. To not be ashamed of who you are or what you want to be and not to limit yourself solely because everyone around you does. If you want to be a musician yet you believe you have little to no musical basis, then reach for it anyways. If you want to be a scientist but your grades in science are failing, then reach for it anyways. Your only limit is the one you put on yourself. You can be told that you have to do something, but you really don't. You are entitled to your life and cherish that with every moment because you're gonna regret it if you don't.
A survey was done in an old folks home and they were asked what they regret most in life.
Their answers?
Approximately 90% of them didn't regret what they did do, but they regretted what they didn't do.
So take chances, be yourself, and don't listen to the people that limit you, but still be kind to them. Please, please be kind. It's a very important thing that is also scarce in some parts of society, but don't assume that everyone is unkind because that would be unkind yourself. I urge you all to be better people as you continue living. Please continue living and continue living doing things that will make you happy.
